Alegion

UX and Web Design

Here is a very small snippet of work from my time with Alegion. While I was with the company I worked in several rolls from UX design for the annotation platform to web design and management. Unfortunately, Alegion has since closed down and with it some of my work and the companies website.

Building a better experience

The tool shown here was a complete reskin of our existing video annotation tool. The work done in this tool was very visually complex and varied. This created a unique challenge to design as simple an operation as possible to reduce the cognitive load while still providing a large amount of information to our users at the same time.

Video Annotation View

Here is a quick view of what it looks like to work in the video annotation tool I worked on. With drawing tools on the left panel, Image adjustment tools on the right, and a size adjustable scrubbing tool on the bottom that combines video scrubbing and object visualizations on a timeline. Like combining a video editor and music editor into one tool. This view allowed users to access everything they needed without overloading the already complex workspace; and of course a number of key binds were added to simplify to the process for our users.

Adapting and Learning

These represent a very small glimpse of what I worked on at Alegion. In addition to the video annotation tool I also managed the companies website and assisted with a full over hall and redesign. I conducted user studies and research with my team and helped design multiple additions and tools to the annotation platform. The video annotation project alone was a long undertaking. We conducted user tests with the old version of the video tool (which can be viewed in an article HERE), we interviewed several of our more active users, completed a full breakdown user journey, and ran A/B tests to work in new tools and tool relocations. Our tests showed that, for a 60 second video with a medium to large number of objects to track, could take one user 4-8+ hours and over 100,000 individual actions(i.e. major mouse movements, clicks, tool selections, data entry) to complete. With the redesign we were able to reduce the time and number of actions a user needed to take by 6-10x depending on the number of objects in a video. Unfortunately I was unable to personally save more than a few examples during my time with the company and It has since closed, taking down the website with it.
